It is computer science education week. Students will have an opportunity to participate in the Hour of Code. Your child can learn more about computer science by completing tutorials on fun, coding projects. Some options include: writing a computer program, build an iPhone game, build an online game, and learning "Robot Vocabulary." You can even complete these challenges as well. Years ago if you wanted to design a kitchen, car, house, or outfit, you would have to go to the drafting table and draw a blueprint. Now, there are online programs that cut the design process down. Home improvement stores have a software application that allows you to design your new kitchen in less than 30 minutes. HP works with fashion designers to help reduce their planning stages down by having all their sketches online. Even engineers use computer programs to design cars.
The biggest advantage to these online programs is that it gives you flexibility. If you want to make a minor change, you don't have to throw away your work. You can point and click to make the change. If you want to see your room or car in different colors to make your decision, you can see the changes without having to draw different plans.
You can play these online games to see how easy technology makes the design process:

*Design and print a room design (http://kids.discovery.com/games/just-for-fun/room-maker)
*Create and print a house (http://www.abcya.com/build_a_house.htm)

We use words and sign language to communicate with our friends. How do computers communicate with other computers or forms of technology? Computers use a digital code. It uses the numbers 0 and 1. A string of the numbers form a code.
These codes allow us to store data or perform calculations on the computer. If you want to become a computer programmer, you will learn about digital codes.

The Discover Kids website has a great program to help younger students learn how to use the computer. Through fun games, children will learn to find letters on the keyboard. They will also learn how to use the mouse to navigate through games.
There are over 10 games to choose from. Three games are unlocked. Your child may want to try the robot or shark game.
